Foraging, Feasting & Botanical Art: Identify, Draw, Harvest, & Prepare Wild Edible Plants

Workshop Description:

Explore the culinary treasures & artistic beauty hidden in local wild plants. Learn to identify, draw, harvest, and prepare these ancient foods so you can easily incorporate them into your daily life. The workshop begins in the garden where Dina will introduce some of these feral, abundant plants followed by a drawing lesson with Wendy. Wendy will share the techniques she uses to create botanically accurate illustrations, demonstrating the basic principals with easy to follow step-by-step lessons using colored pencils. Through the process of drawing, participants develop plant identification skills and gain a deeper understanding of the plants. Back in the field, Dina will supervise the harvesting of plants. Then Dina will share delicious, enlightening, nutrient-dense recipes from the book Foraging & Feasting: A Field Guide and Wild Food Cookbook.

Includes hands-on food preparation and tasting. Additional time will be allocated to continue botanical drawing techniques. What Participants will learn:In this workshop participants will connect with nature through wild plants as food and art. Plant identification skills, an understanding of plant structure, and the basic techniques of botanical drawing such as value, consistent light source, perspective, and realistic color will be taught. In the kitchen, Dina will teach basic recipe templates that empower us to cook with the plants at hand, wild or cultivated.
